Lochaber 3
Beauly 5
Pre-season friendly
Beauly came from a goal down to beat Lochaber 5-3 in their 1pm throw-up at Spean Bridge.
Lochaber led 1-0 at the break but Beauly’s decision to move Louie MacLellan to half forward paid dividends as he grabbed a hat-trick.
A fine Jack MacDonald finish and Farquhar MacRae’s shot from a tight angle completed Beauly’s scoring.
Kevin Ferguson, Stuart Callison and Max Cambell scored the Lochaber goals.
Lochaber manager Ally Ferguson said: “It was a good work-out with everyone getting game time to get their match fitness up to speed.” Beauly co-manager Gregor MacCormick said: “Louie MacLellan was fantastic in the second half. With Angus Renwick, Colin MacDonald and Conor Ross all missing, we fielded a young side.
“We had chances in the first half and at the break, we asked the boys to be more competitive and work harder at closing Lochaber down and they did that.
“Torrin Cairns was very good in defence against Lochaber danger man Ben Delaney. We have a few things to improve on, but that was a good start.”
Promoted Beauly have swapped places in the Mowi Premiership with relegated Lochaber, a fact not lost on both clubs as Gregor MacCormick added: “We know there’s little between the sides, so the game made sense, so much so that we’ll meet again at our place the week before the new season starts.”
Fort William 5
Inveraray 1
Pre-season friendly
Fort William got their pre-season programme off to a flying start when they beat Inveraray 5-1 at An Aird. The Fort William goals came from Victor Smith, Lachie Shaw and Calum Shepherd, with a double from man-of-the-match Archie MacKinnon.
Inveraray are sure to have received a warm reception as their league victory over Beauly at the end of last season left the door open for Fort William to win the Mowi National Division title.
Glasgow Mid Argyll 6
Skye Camanachd 3
Pre-season friendly
Glasgow Mid Argyll came from two goals down to beat Skye Camanachd 6-3 in their 12.30pm throw-up at Peterson Park.
Skye travelled without Sam Macphee, James Morrison, Kenny Cushnie, Ross Nicolson and Ruaraidh MacLeod so there were call-ups for second team players Jack Latton, Charlie Latton and Cammy MacKay.
Two-goal Archie Millar and Ross Gordon counted for the islanders but Calum McLay’s double and goals from Calum Morrison, Craig Anderson, Logan Adam and Caley MacLeod gave GMA victory.
GMA manager Alan MacRae said: “It was a good run-out and I’m happy with the performance, especially coming back from two goals down. We showed grit and determination in what was a good competitive game.”
Newtonmore 3
Kilmallie 2
Pre-season friendly
Newtonmore were 3-2 winners against Kilmallie in their 1.30pm throw-up at The Eilan.
Newtonmore were without Steven Macdonald, Craig Ritchie and Conor Jones, whilst Kilmallie fielded Innes Blackhall, who is serving a domestic suspension, at buckshee forward.
Iain Robinson set up Drew MacDonald to put Newtonmore ahead and it was Robinson who doubled the home side’s lead with a backhand strike into the corner of the goal following a corner.
Innes Blackhall pulled a goal back after being played in by Martin Stewart to go one-on-one with keeper Kenny Ross and he pushed the ball home.
Newtonmore restored their two-goal cushion when Struan Ross found Iain Robinson who scored his second.
Kilmallie came much more into it in the second half and Jack Campbell scored his first goal for the senior side when he smashed the ball home from the left side to make the final score 3-2.
Kinlochshiel 10
Kilmallie 1
Pre-season friendly
Young Jay MacRae scored five times as the Kinlochshiel second team beat the Kilmallie second team 10-1 in their 1pm throw-up at Rèaraig.
Rory Barclay’s hat-trick and strikes from Duncan Macmillan and Lewis MacVicar made up the home side’s count.
One of Kilmallie’s promising young players, 15-year-old Coby Fyfe, was on target for the visitors.
Lochaber keeper appeal
Lochaber are on the look-out for a new first team goalkeeper.
A combination of work commitments and injury have ruled out Ali MacDonald and Calum MacDonald leaving the Mowi National Division side without a recognised, experienced custodian with the new shinty season due to start on Saturday March 1.
Defender Brennan MacDonald stepped in against Beauly last weekend and made some good saves.
