It has been a packed event schedule throughout the year with the community coming together for Eggventure Oban, a Water Safety Spring Meet, InsideOut Climbing, and the epic Big Bike Weekend in October, writes Isla McCulloch.
'A highlight of the year has been the partnership with Oban Sailing Club and other
stakeholders to negotiate a long term lease for their site at Dungallan Park so they can
invest in the slipway and key infrastructure. This has included a sublease for what was
previously the Stramash shed in the park with MKM Oban kindly donating materials to
enable us to make it wind and watertight. We are looking forward to improving the shed
further so we can open it up for community use in 2023.
'This year, Adventure Oban also partnered with ACT (Argyll Coast and Countryside Trust) and Argyll and Bute Council to be the community anchor leads to develop an Active Travel Plan for Oban as part of the Scotland-wide Sustaining Choices project.
'The engagement and feedback from the community has all been fed into an action plan to make the town an easier place to walk, wheel and cycle around. This plan will be published in early 2023 so keep an eye out for that and the next steps - forgive the pun!
'This year we were delighted to bring on Barry Harper, our first paid member of the team, to lead our Adventure Library pilot. The Adventure Library aims to be a community resource, providing access to outdoor kit and equipment. Barry brought a breadth of experience of working in the outdoors industry and helped move the pilot forward, investigating systems and processes, insurance, securing further funding and assistance in purchasing a steel container and storage solutions from MacQueen Bros. Thanks to them we now have a dedicated unit to keep donations safe and sound.
'The Oban community has come forward with some great donations of kit for the library such as SUPs and a mountain board! While we are still working on a streamlined system for members of the public to access the library, we have worked with various other community groups across the area to facilitate access to gear for events, this included the beautiful Seaweed Gardens snorkelling harvest day.
'Building on the brilliant success of the Big Bike Weekend, we are planning more community cycling initiatives for 2023, get in touch if you want to get involved or want to chat about any other action packed events for the new year.
'Adventure Oban is a not-for-profit local charity led by a team of volunteer directors. We look for ways we can support our local Oban community to more fully interact and engage with the great outdoors.'
