Despite describing his latest performance on the PGA tour as ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’, Bob MacIntyre continued his steady progress stateside with a tie for 33rd spot at the Valspar Championship in Tampa, Florida, at the weekend.
Played over the tough Palm Harbour course in challenging blustery conditions, the Oban man made the cut after the first two days despite by his own admission ‘playing terrible’.
His game improved over the weekend, but the left-hander was never able to get a sustained run going that would have seen him make a significant move up the leaderboard.
He eventually had to settle on a -2 total, ten shots behind eventual winner Peter Malnati of the USA.
After a tough start to his maiden season on the PGA tour saw him miss three cuts in his first four events, there are now positive signs that the 27-year-old is finding his feet amongst the game’s biggest stars. He has now made four cuts in his last five appearances and secured his first top ten finish.
After playing his last few events in his adopted home state of Florida, Bob now moves on to the Lone Star State to compete in the Texas Children’s Houston Open this Thursday.
The tournament is his last opportunity to secure a coveted spot in the US Masters in April. In all probability, a win will be required to guarantee him a spot and, while that scenario might have seemed highly unlikely earlier in the season, there have been enough positive signs recently to give Bob and his supporters grounds for optimism.
