An Ardishaig woman has become the first non-Italian to win one of that country’s most prestigious accolades.
Roma Barbara Philand, sister of Argyll and Bute Provost, Councillor Dougie Philand, has been awarded the Maestra del Lavoro, Italy’s equivalent of a British OBE.
Roma’s parents Robert and Lena Cameron from Ardrishaig travelled to Italy to be with their daughter when she was awarded the honour by the country’s president Sergio Mattarella.
Councillor Philand said: "I am delighted for Roma. She has worked hard for many years and has earned the award conferred upon her."
Roma’s husband Mauro Maini told the Advertiser: “Roma was very honoured in receiving this immense award and I was very proud of her.”
Mauro explained that Roma earned this honour for her ‘immense contribution’ to the expansion of the Italian firm she has worked for for more than 31 years, both in Italy and in the UK.
The company, Cremonini Spa, is one of the biggest and most successful catering firms operating in Europe and owns the popular brand, Bagel Factory.
Mauro added: “Roma started as a part-time crew member on the shop floor, and, through the acquisition of professional knowledge and experience, she reached the top of her profession.
“Roma gained respect for her leadership and professionalism, and her capacity for training staff at all levels, team building; she is an example to all.
“She is the only woman of non-Italian origin to have been awarded this title, Maestra Del Lavoro.”
