The Benderloch and North Connel Drama Club is gearing up to present this year’s pantomime, Aladdin.
This production features a script by acclaimed playwright Alan McHugh, known for his humour that resonates with audiences and casts alike. Originally written for Alloa, the script has been adapted with McHugh’s permission to incorporate local touches, including references to current events and regional quirks. The result is a performance infused with familiar place names and characters, promising plenty of laughs and playful irreverence for the audience.
Directing the production is George Hamilton, a long-time member of the club who has retired from his well-loved role as the Dame to bring his extensive stage experience to this new challenge. The cast, a dynamic mix of generations from energetic Generation Z to seasoned Baby Boomers, is supported by a dedicated backstage team. This year, the show also welcomes Isabel Hopley’s dance troupe, adding an extra layer of vibrancy to the production.
The story of Aladdin takes audiences on a whimsical journey from a small coastal town—one that may feel quite familiar—to far-off exotic locations, reached by some very unusual means of transport. The colourful cast of characters includes the lovesick Widow Twankey, her spirited son Wishee Washee, the captivating Scherezade and Genie with a penchant for extravagant magic. Romance blossoms between Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, while her mischievous maid SoShy adds to the fun. Meanwhile, the Emperor and Empress struggle with a kingdom on the brink of chaos, desperately seeking a saviour to restore order.
The pantomime wouldn’t be complete without its classic battle of good versus evil. The scheming villain Abanazar, who dreams of ruling the world, will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. But can he outwit the resourceful and courageous Aladdin? The audience will have plenty of chances to cheer the heroes and boo the villains as the story unfolds.
Packed with humour, adventure, and high-energy performances, this production of Aladdin promises entertainment for all ages. Audiences are invited to join the fun at the Corran Halls and discover whether Aladdin can save the day!
