Argyll and Bute U16 Girls met the well-drilled Mid-Glasgow and South-West teams for the second round of the West Quaich at Bishopton Rugby Club on Sunday, writes Drew Buckley.
Players from Lochgilphead, Campbeltown, Oban and Mull joined up again to form an Argyll select and showcased some of their best plays yet.
The girls started their first game against Mid-Glasgow tentatively, missing four of their more experienced players due to injury, including last week’s two co-captains.
Mid-Glasgow opened the scoring with two quick tries in the first 10 minutes. Argyll kept their heads up and tightened their defence. A quick offload from a scrum through forward Alice saw Emily made the break to score the crucial next try. Mid-Glasgow then scored another to widen the gap before the break.
A half time talk with the coaches and encouraging words from co-captain Hayleigh turned the team’s confidence around. Annie made the break, and ploughed her way through defender after defender, to score a well-deserved try; this was then ably converted by her too.
Mid-Glasgow were not to be defeated though, and scored another two tries, increasing their final tally to 10-60. The Argyll and Bute girls, despite the score, were pleased with their performance and knew they’d put in 100 per cent effort despite the loss.
Going into their second game against South West, spirits were high and determination levels were even higher.
This was reflected in the early plays, as Argyll opened the scoring in the first few minutes with a strong break from Caya, who couldn’t be caught by the opposition and scored a fantastic try.
This was converted with enthusiasm by Annie, and the girls erupted in laughter when it landed on a car bonnet.
Settling into the game, Hailey and Abi tackled everything that moved, not giving an inch. Kiyana and Grace gained some distance in the backs, keeping the play out of the Argyll half.
A rapid break from Gracie with the SW winger hot on her heels was off-loaded to Sienna within touching distance of the try line, to give the Mull player her first try for Argyll in only her second game since moving up from U14s the previous week.
The girls perhaps got a bit too comfortable in their lead and the score was soon evened up by the home team. SW then scored another to take the lead, with only a few minutes to go.
On the conversion, a swift team chat to decide to give it everything they had in the last few minutes resulted in a try for Erin, whose play was faultless all day.
Some strong tackles from Violet stopped the opposition scoring again on several occasions in the final minute.
The game finished 27-26 to the home side - a tremendous effort from every one of the 11 girls.
Following the games, the coaches said: “Take aways from today are that we are starting to gel as a team; working to each players strengths and that, as a result, our confidence and performance improved tenfold today.
“Onwards to next week, where Argyll host in Lochgilphead and we look forward to welcoming both teams to our home ground.
“A big thank you to Bishopton Rugby for hosting us! And to Ophelie, Marion and Chris who all stepped in to coach the girls yesterday and handle transport.”
