A deep, sonorous boom accompanied the earthquake, which is reported by the British Geological Survey (BGS) to have been centred at Achnamara in Knapdale.
The quake, which struck around 1.44am from a depth of 12km, is estimated by the BGS at magnitude 3.3 and is said to be the largest in the UK this year – though small by global standards.
Residents from across Argyll reported hearing and feeling its effects and were woken from their sleep by the low noise and trembling which reportedly shook homes.
According to the BGS, hundreds of minor earthquakes occur in Britain every year, the vast majority of which are too small to be felt, with around 20 to 30 detected by people.
The BGS has asked anyone who was experienced the tremor to assist its research by completing a 'felt earthquake report' at earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/questionnaire/EqQuestIntro.html
