One of the founders of Food From Argyll, Virginia Sumsion, is retiring from her role as the group’s coordinator after 18 years of dedication and hard work.
The regional food group was born in 2007 when Virginia, who spent 15 years marketing for Loch Fyne Oysters, and a few other Argyll food producers, banded together to serve up tasty offerings at the Connect Music Festival in Inveraray.
Over the years, Food From Argyll developed into a well-established organisation and it now supports over 30 members in building their businesses, runs a café in Oban, and has started its own annual food festival.
Virginia will be stepping down from her duties over the next month due to the increasing demands of her other two jobs and to enjoy being a granny.
She will still have a lot on her plate as she continues her role as estate manager at Ardkinglas House and as director of Cairndow Community Childcare, which runs The Fyne Den. "Sadly, I’m not going to be putting my feet up," she laughed.
Virginia still hopes to help Food From Argyll with future food festivals and events. She added: “I don’t think I’ll ever properly say goodbye.”
At her last annual general meeting (AGM) in February, the group presented Virginia with a retirement gift of her favourite whisky, as well as a flowering cherry tree to replace one that had blown down in her garden.
Virginia said: "It’s been a pleasure to work with positive people, trying to do positive things.
"What’s great is that so many new people have come on board and have so much enthusiasm going forward."
Looking back on Food From Argyll’s accomplishments, Virginia said that appreciation and awareness of local producers has increased significantly since its beginnings.
When the group was founded it was also one of only a few regional food groups in Scotland, but now there is a whole collection.
Virginia added: “People have seen what we’ve done and been inspired. That’s been a great achievement and we have spurred that along.”
Amanda Anderson, event manager for Food From Argyll, said: "Virginia Sumsion has been the driving force behind Food From Argyll for the past 20 years, tirelessly championing the region’s incredible larder.
"Through countless events and initiatives, she has brought people together, forging strong connections with regional food groups, Scotland Food & Drink, Argyll and Bute Council, HIE, and many more.
"Her dedication, integrity, and boundless energy have created a thriving community of food producers, and she has been an inspiration to us all.
"Virginia’s wisdom and enthusiasm will be greatly missed, but we take comfort in knowing she’s only a phone call away!"
