Arran High School pupils recently celebrated finishing second in the Scottish Schools Mathematician of the Year competition with an event on National Numeracy Day.
Principal teacher of mathematics and numeracy Allan Wilson said the school’s success in the competition was the result of a great deal of hard work and enthusiasm from all of the pupils.
In the S2 category, now S3, Harris McCormack and Evie Steel finished the main event with the joint best score nationally for their age category.
In S4, Faye Godwin also gained a podium finish in the competition by finishing in second place outright in her age category. Having already bypassed her S4 maths exam this year, Faye has sat the higher exam for S5/6 pupils, and the national five applications of maths - a course designed to enable pupils to think through real-life situations involving mathematics and to form a plan of action based on logic.
Other pupils representing the school who scored well above the national average were Nara Wood and Thomas Morgan-Lee, S2; and Ben McCarthy and Severin Riddell, S4.
To mark this achievement and celebrate National Numeracy Day, the school teamed up with Andy McNamara from Otter’s Tail for a day of fun outdoor activities that challenged their numeracy, initiative and problem-solving skills.
Mr Wilson was delighted to celebrate the children’s achievements. He praised their efforts in the competition, saying the pupils were extremely talented in the subject and that they were also enthusiastic and a pleasure to teach.
He thanked Andy for the outdoor day and said: “Andy and his team always do such a great job and their enthusiasm and tasks really motivate and engage our young people. The pupils enjoyed themselves learning about how their skills can be applied outside of the classroom.
“Thanks to all staff at the school for their help as it was a major operation getting three year groups out of school on the same day.”
