Upper Achintore Regeneration Group’s “Design a Greetings Card from Upper Achintore” Competition was won by Primary 6 student Emily Easson from Lundavra Primary School.
Her drawing (pictured) was described by judge Susie Brown as “showing a brilliant understanding of composition, depth of field and colour; and capturing the feeling of Christmas perfectly”.
The Christmas Tree Lights Switch-On competition was organised by the Regeneration Group (UARG) to set the scene for the festive season and lift the spirits of its 2,000 local residents.
Emily’s prize, in addition to a Lochaber Rotary Book and a Selection Box from the Tenant Participation Team, was the honour of performing the Christmas Tree lights switch-on ceremony on Saturday November 30, which, given the cold chilly evening, was attended by a significantly reduced number of local residents.
Nevertheless, all present enthusiastically joined local resident and guitar musician David Anderson in an evening of Christmas carols and singalong songs.
Mince pies were distributed around everyone.
UARG chair, Mark Linfield welcomed everyone and thanked them for “braving the Lochaber weather to see the tree lights being switched on”.
Mark also thanked David for leading the singing, Spars (CJ Lang & Sons) Grange Road for the mince pies and
sweets and added: “I must also thank the Tenant Participation Team for their continuing support and the excellent tree they have provided.
"Finally, thanks to Lundavra Primary students for all their lovely card designs and to Susie Brown, local artist for judging the competition.”
Susie was brought up in Inverlochy and now lives at Achaphubuil. She is a graduate of Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen having studied art and sculpture.
Susie spent a considerable amount of time assessing and judging the entries. She said: “It was very difficult to select just three winners from over one hundred entries to the Christmas Card Competition.
“It goes to show just how much creativity, imagination and talent there is in Fort William.”
After selecting Emily’s "Snow is Falling" as the overall winner, in second place Susie chose Natalie Mackinnon from Primary 1’s "Snowman’s Fingers" as runner-up.
“I loved Natalie’s imaginative use of her hand print to create such a characterful and fun card design,” she added.
In third place Suzie selected Primary 7’s Milana Gabrane’s "Ho Ho" saying that “Milana’s bold, graphic style has created a very striking card design”.
The Regeneration Group’s next “virtual” meeting is at 6.30pm on Monday December 16.
All local residents are welcome and if you would like an invitation to attend, email the Group at uarg19@aol.com.
