Selfless courage
What drives a young man from the Ardnamurchan peninsula thousands of miles to Ukraine to fight Russians?
Outrage? Compassion? An inability to stand by and watch fellow humans suffer when he knows he can do something to help? Possibly all three.
Jordan Maclachlan, 26, volunteered to help Ukraine after Russia’s invasion in February 2022 and joined their army soon afterwards. He died on January 3 this year while serving as a medic.
Russia’s Vladimir Putin is now directly responsible for literally countless deaths, possibly in the hundreds of thousands, including Jordan’s. Jordan chose to help the Ukrainian cause as hands-on as he could, leaving his home in our region to do so. Putin should contemplate this; the courage and selflessness, and love, of Jordan and so many others who refuse to give in and let evil win.
In a statement last week, Jordan’s family said: "Jordan always believed that he was making a difference and we are all so proud of him helping others.” Indeed, I can well grasp the sense of pride and extend my heartfelt condolences to the family for the loss of such a precious young life.
I feel outraged at what has happened; Jordan should never have felt the need to make the ultimate sacrifice. May he rest in peace.
Just another winter’s tale
No doubt some of you will have been shocked by the headline: “£120m needed to bring Argyll roads up to scratch”.
Hmm. Forgive me for being an auld cynic, but this is an issue every year because of the damage caused to our roads by our winter weather depredations. Freezing conditions and the actions required to counter them wreak havoc annually.
Every spring, the council has to deploy numerous squads to repair the damage; it follows that the harsher the winter, the higher will be the cost. The council says it is massively short of the funds needed. If that’s the case, I suspect someone has failed in their job.
