So, the installation of wood-burning stoves in new houses has been banned.
Here’s a thing: I have one and love it. It’s a great heater and helps to cut our bills significantly. What’s more, I think it is “green”.
We have an abundance of usable, already cut down timber literally within just a few yards of our home.
Would the green lobby seriously prefer me to buy fossil fuel energy from a big company?
My wood stove heats our home brilliantly using only material that is otherwise left to rot.
I was very much relieved to hear of the positive response to the recent crisis flagged up by debt-burdened Oban FM, the local radio station.
The community radio station had faced closing down because of debts of around £50,000 and had appealed for help. Thankfully, there has been a positive response to the SOS.
Chairperson of the station’s board Campbell Cameron told The Oban Times that without urgent help, Oban FM could have just one month left on air. Those owed money include the station’s landlord The Rockfield Centre.
I am mightily relieved and cheered by the response so far but not much surprised; I bet I could name some of our local business leaders offering to help. Some of my Oban entrepreneur chums dig deep all the time to fund local charity efforts. They seek nothing in return – not even publicity from me – but act purely from philanthropy and altruism.
These sound souls are brilliant and deserve all our thanks.
You dear regular readers of my meanderings will be familiar with the awed admiration I have for those gallant souls who make up the RNLI.
You may be unsurprised that I mention the lifeboats, which are this spring celebrating 200 years of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, and quite rightly too.
Over on Mull, Tobermory RNLI doubled the celebrations at the weekend to include the 34th anniversary of the reopening of Tobermory’s lifeboat station in 1990.
Congratulations and very well done to all involved.
