Flooding hell
I cannot believe how many years have passed since I first declaimed about flooding in Oban, particularly in the Lochavullin industrial estate area.
Yet the problem persists - much to the discredit of Argyll and Bute Council. Just a week before the first anniversary of £1m damage caused by flooding last year, the council has again been inept in addressing the issue.
Now Oban Community Council and BID4Oban have teamed up with the Scottish Flood Forum to organise an open event at The Rockfield Centre’s Oak Room on Thursday October 3 from 6pm to 8pm.
This will be a chance to learn more about the new Flood Resilience Group being set up by volunteers and to share your flooding experiences, whether it is your home or business that has been hit.
There will also be some examples of flood prevention products to look at.
Oban Community Council convener Frank Roberts has urged everyone with concerns to attend.
I second that. Let’s put the council under pressure to sort out this issue.
Winning ways
What a weekend. I turned as always to the sports pages of my Oban Times last week and was blown away by the brilliant results across a range of games.
Oban Saints continued their great start to the season with a 7-0 thumping of Stenhousemuir Foundation. Club secretary David Buchanan told me their opponents this season have not been high quality but you can only beat the guys on the pitch and they have done just that.
On and off the rugby field, Oban Lorne players and fans were celebrating after another superb weekend. The men humbled Bishopton 85-0 with a commanding performance, while the ladies team saw off Hillhead Jordanhill 27-5.
In shinty, Oban Camanachd trounced Kyles Athletic 4-0 away from home in the Mowi Premiership and Oban Celtic’s second team eased past Tayforth 7-3 in Mowi South Division 2.
There was also an update on golf star Bob MacIntyre and what he’s up to.
What a weekend for Oban sport.
