Campbeltown has been left with just one bank after the closure on Tuesday of the Bank of Scotland’s Longrow South branch.
Once home to four bank branches – including the Royal Bank of Scotland at Castlehill and the TSB on Bolgam Street – the latest closure leaves just Virgin Money, formerly the Clydesdale Bank, on Longrow, to serve the town’s banking needs.
The Bank of Scotland, a subsidiary of the Lloyds Banking Group, initially said the Campbeltown branch would close on October 29 but this was delayed until November 19, with all staff at the branch offered a role at another branch or in another part of the business.
The banking group blamed “a change in customers’ banking behaviour” for the decision to close the branch, adding: “Before we close any branch, we look at how our customers are managing their money and using the branch. Most customers are now using our mobile banking app, internet banking or calling us instead. This means they are using branches, including our Campbeltown branch, much less.”
The closure is part of 190 branch closures across the UK, including 15 Bank of Scotland branches, between this year and next.
A spokesperson for the Bank of Scotland told the Courier: “The local Post Office offers everyday banking, with cash also available at close-by free-to-use ATMs.
“Customers can also manage their money through our mobile banking apps, online, by calling us or speaking to a ‘community banker’.”
Currently, the closest location visited by a community banker is 37 miles away in Tarbert.
Following the closure, one bank customer said: “It’s a sad day for Campbeltown to see the Bank of Scotland close its doors for the final time. It has been at that location for a long number of years but it seems to be a sign of the times.
“We are told that ‘cash is king’ but with only one cash point in the town centre now, how long will it be until we’re living in a cashless society and how will that affect our high street businesses?”
