With a strong team of the ladies looked determined as they kicked to start the game.
Straight out the gate with some big runners Ayr hit hard looking for the weak spot in Oban’s defence. Met with massive tackles from Jodi Millar and Caitlin Fowler the hosts had to take to the skies and open up their kicking game to gain ground.
But yet again they were met with lightning pace from Jordan MacIntyre dominating the lineouts forcing the hosts to rethink their approach.
As both teams settled into the match ball retention became Oban’s main issue as Ayr skilfully ripped possession away at any opportunity.
With some great physicality and raw grit and determination Oban dug deep and answered all of the punishing attacks for 33 minutes until finally Ayr added their first points to the board.
With momentum behind them Ayr weren’t long in adding a further try before the end of the first half leaving the score at 12-0 to the home side.
The second half started with Oban set to receive. Heather Fothergill and Poppy MacKillop began their campaign with quick footwork and amazing pace, punching holes in Ayr’s defence and forcing them to scramble to keep up.
However, one handling error to many saw Ayr take advantage and run in another seven points.
With fresh legs on the bench Oban coach Corrie Louw tipped Rebekah Palmer to take the field and within minutes Rachel MacDonald linked in beautifully to cross for Oban’s first five points.
As if relighting a fire under the team it wasn’t long until Oban were back in Ayr’s 22 with powerful carries from Ailsa MacCuish and Lindsay MacMillan.
Eventually with some careful play Julie Campbell crossed the line aided by Jodi Millar in a team worked try converted by Ellie Picked taking the score to 19-12.
Unfortunately Oban’s tenacity wasn’t enough to keep Ayr at bay.
