Ben turns a corner in promising football career
Fort William footballer Ben Corner has achieved the dream of many youngsters by signing a professional contract with Inverness Caledonian Thistle (ICT) Football Club.
Ben, a versatile attacker comfortable playing in midfield, out wide or up front, has been part of the ICT youth development since the age of 11, travelling from Lochyside three times a week for games and training.
The former Scottish Premier League side, having been relegated down the divisions, arrive in League One this season without a host of senior players amidst off-field financial issues.
Ben, 17, has signed a one-year deal.
The former Lochaber High School pupil made his competitive debut in Caley’s 1-0 defeat away to Annan Athletic, playing 25 minutes and then played the entire second half in a 0-0 draw – and subsequent defeat on penalties - at home to Arbroath in the Premier Sports Cup on Tuesday July 23 last week.
Manager Duncan Ferguson brought Ben on at half time.
Although there were chances and a lot of stylish play, the game ended 0-0.
Ben said of the manager: “He’s wanting us to play possession-based football, find a killer pass, be ruthless and get a goal. We were unlucky tonight.”
Despite the result, Ben is enjoying the level of football.
“It’s good experience being aged only 17. Most of the team is young. We can’t complain, playing League One.”
On making his competitive debut against Annan, Ben said: “It was good. I’m quite physical, so I can handle myself.
“But technically, it’s a different ball game to youth football. Before you get the ball, you have to know where you’re going to pass it. You have to be three steps ahead.”
Ben’s next chance to feature will be at Caley’s next match, at home to Dumbarton on Saturday August 3 at 3pm.
