Oban golfer Bob MacIntyre says his ’dream season’ can catapult him into mix to grab one of the sport’s biggest prizes next year.
As he prepares to tee off tomorrow at 8.05am alongside Matteo Manassero in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship at Jumeriah Golf Estates, the 28-year-old took time to relfect on a stellar period that has seen him win titles on both sides of the Atlantic.
Bob became box office after winning the Candian Open and the Scottish Open in 2024, cementing his place as one of the game’s rising stars. But what comes next for the ambitious Glencruitten man as he looks to take the next step in the sport?
He said: “I haven’t had a full sit-down debrief with everyone within the team but when I do, even when I look at my phone, when I’m trying to take a photo on my own and I went through it, things pop up because I’m scrolling, and it’s like, wow, that happened, wow, that happened, and wow, that happened.
“It is just incredible to think that I’ve achieved a lot of my dreams in one season, in one swoop, and it’s been brilliant. But there’s still hopefully more to come.”
The Glencruitten man has two top-tens in Majors so far in his career but believes 2024 can prove the perfect launchpad to compete for one of the ‘Big Four’ next season.
He explained: "It’s trying to work out what to do to now get to that next page, and it’s trying not to lose sight of what’s got you here, and not changing, not being like a revolution of your whole game.
“It’s just about, ’what can improve, let’s try and tweak it a little bit.’ Don’t try and overwrite the whole thing. Stick to the basics and then just work on little bits to get you to the next level and into regular contention at major championships.”
With an invitation from Tiger Woods at the Hero World Challenge before the end of the year, Bob recognises how his incredible year has opened new opportunities.
He added: "It has been career-changing, one hundred per cent. I’m in a position now where I can pick what I do, I’ve now got to the top level of professional golf, the top 25 per cent of professional players.
“You can then choose your schedule, you’re in all the majors, all the other top events and that’s where you want to be.
“Last year I obviously played a lot and that’s because you have to play in something to get in somewhere else. I said it from when these PGA Tour cards cane about, what an opportunity it is to get as high up the world of golf as you can.
“I think the majority of golfers out here have got that dream, as well. Luckily I got one of them and then I’ve worked hard and I’ve got the breaks to get to where I am now.”
