Oban’s Bob MacIntyre says he is ready to ’get selfish’ in a bid to land a major.
Having won the Scottish and Canadian opens last year, the Glencruitten man believes that he needs to be more careful with the demands on his time as he looks to take his sporting achievements to the next level.
The 28-year-old said: “I’ve not changed as a person, but I have in a professional way that I’ve become more selfish. I watch what the best players in the world do and I think that once you get to a certain level in golf, everyone is trying to get a piece of you and pull you in different directions.
"So me, my caddy and the people around me have just had to be a bit more selfish with time. Some people don’t like it, but time is valuable. And, if you are being pulled from pillar to post, then you’ve got no time to practice - it’s just part of the job we are in."
His comments come as Bob bids to land the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, which is currently being played at the Emirates GC in Dubai.
He began the tournament with a 71 yesterday, brilliantly clawing his way back from a shaky start that threatened to derail his round before it got off the ground. Bogeys on six and 12 were followed by birdies on 13, 17 and 18 as the 28-year-old showed tremedous fortitude to hold his game together.
He was back on the course this morning for his second 18 and will have been slightly disappointed by an inconsistent round littered with brilliance and bogeys in equal measure.
Two one over fives on the front nine were levelled out by three birdies. These were followed by two more under par efforts on 10 and 11 as the Oban man threatened to mount a dash up the leaderboard. The 12th hole unfortunately came back to haunt him for the second day in a row and claimed another dropped shot before a brilliant putt on 16 saw him pull a stroke back to card a solid 69 which will see him return for the weekend.
Although sitting outside the top 20, the Glencruitten man has shown enough to be able to mount a charge over Saturday and Sunday amid what is a tightly packed field.
