Oban’s Robert MacIntyre took the positives from the disappointment of missing the cut at the Players Championship at Sawgrass on Friday.
The Scot admitted he finds the famous course a challenge, saying: “Wasn’t to be this week. Twice I’ve played this event and twice I’ve come off thinking how can you make a score round this place? One of those courses for me.”
The one aspect of his game that has been sluggish since the start of the season, his putting, was a bright spot in his otherwise flat performance in Florida.
Speaking after rounds of 74 and 76 saw him miss the weekend, he said: “There are some really good signs in the game. The long game wasn’t good this week, but I’m starting to see the putts go in again.”
As he now turns his attention to the Valspar Championship in Tampa, which begins on Thursday, Bob can take comfort from the words of fellow Scot Martin Laird, a 20-year PGA tour veteran, who gave the left hander a ringing endorsement.
Laird, who made the cut in his 14th appearance at the Players Championship said: “I know his game really well and was never concerned about it. His game is suited for over here. He hits it hard, he hits it far, very good ball-striker. If you look at all the top guys who play over here, that’s generally the recipe.”
The Players Championship was won by world number one Scottie Scheffler, who triumphed by one shot over Wyndham Clark, the player Bob defeated in the Ryder Cup singles in Rome last year.
