In an opening day where Rory McIlroy reminded any doubters about why he is one of the best in the world by posting an opening round of 65, Oban’s Bob MacIntyre’s stayed patient to finish day one in a tie for 16th place after posting a level par round of 70 at the US Open, the third Major of the year.
The left-hander sat at two over par with five holes to play after posting bogeys at the 4th and 13th holes. In tough conditions, any further slip-ups could have seen the Scot effectively play his way out of contention on the opening day.
Instead, his calm demeanour and new-found confidence saw him knock in a five foot birdie putt on his 14th hole then follow it up by capitalising on a superb approach shot on his penultimate hole to finish off a promising round in style.
With an early tee off today - 12.18pm UK time - MacIntyre will be hoping to take advantage of what are traditionally the slightly more benign early conditions to firstly make the weekend cut and, more importantly, put himself in contention in a major championship again.
