The Gloves are on and the seconds are counting down to the Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club Home Show in the Nevis Centre on Saturday March 29.
Founded in 2008, the Club has delivered a wealth of talent to the world of amateur boxing, with champions at all levels from schoolboy to senior at national and even international competition with members of the Scotland Squad.
Their latest show is also shaping up to be an exciting night, made up almost entirely of local boxers trained by the club stepping into the ring to face competition from across the country, closely matched in skill, age and weight to ensure evenly matched, fair and exciting action.
As a registered charity everyone involved in the Club takes part not only for the love of the sport, but also to provide opportunities to young people from the age of seven upwards to develop a sense of well-being both physically and mentally, gaining confidence, self-control and working as part of a supportive extended ‘family’.
On the night itself at least 10 bouts are on the cards, possibly with a couple more depending on availability of boxers from other clubs.
As a member of Boxing Scotland, the officially recognised national ‘umbrella’ organisation of the sport, Lochaber Phoenix works closely with over 130 other amateur clubs in Scotland to give local boxers the unique opportunity to train, meet and compete with the best in the country.
Very much part of the wider community, the Club was last year awarded Lochaber Voluntary Organisation of the Year, followed by top Highland award, as Third Sector Judges Choice against competition from across the Highlands for its work with young and not-so-young members.
Other than showcasing the tremendous local talent, the Home Show is one of the Club’s main fund raising activities so it can continue to keep operating while keeping costs low for members.
Club official Stephen McManus said: “The Club does a great job in engaging with people of all ages and backgrounds, also working closely with Lochaber High School in delivering activities for pupils which they find very beneficial.
“All of our boxers have been well trained over months and even years to get ring-ready and our head coach Aidan Donnelly has been working hard behind the scenes to make sure they get well matched opponents on the night for exciting and balanced action to show their talent while giving the audience a thrilling experience.”
Tickets are on sale for tables (with waitress service) at £30 per seat and bleachers for £15.00, although all are now in limited supply, so be quick. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
It is also possible to sponsor a bout at £100.00. Contact the club through its Facebook page, at the Corpach gym during opening hours or by email lpboxshow@gmail.com.
