A small community group, created four years ago to take ownership of its local phone box, has expanded to become a Scottish charity aiming to improve life for all its village residents.
And now a specially commissioned film has been made to document life in this unique Mid Argyll community.
The Cairnbaan Community Trust held its first annual general meeting on Thursday November 7 and hosted the premier showing of its film, entitled We Are Cairnbaan.
“We Are Cairnbaan is around half an hour long, documenting the highs and lows of small community life,” Tayvallich film-maker Joe Osborn explained. “Cairnbaan has lost a lot over the years, but the community spirit is still there, and very much alive. There’s a real sense of optimism for the future of the area.”
This optimism was reflected in the discussions at the AGM, held in the Eggshed, Ardrishaig due to the lack of a suitable meeting venue in Cairnbaan itself.
The meeting was well attended by members, associates and stakeholders who approved the trust’s constitution and its trustees for the coming year. Two new members joined the board, Wilf Hughes and Ian Brooke.
A spokesperson for the trust said: “They bring extensive experience and skills to complement existing members.
"Seven trustees were approved for board appointments, with several vacancies.
" Anyone from Cairnbaan interested in joining is most welcome to apply via the trust website: cairnbaancommunitytrust.org.”
Following the meeting’s business, the new film was shown.
Joe Osborn of Carsaig Films worked closely with the trust in the making of the film which was financed by a grant from the Nadara A’Cruach Windfarm Trust.
The film should soon be available for anyone to see on the Cairnbaan Community Trust website.
The community trust is hopeful that meetings will one day be held within the village as the trust is currently awaiting a decision from Forestry and Land Scotland for an asset transfer of two buildings at Lock 8 to community ownership.
If this is successful, application will be made to the Scottish Land Fund to purchase the buildings in Cairnbaan to provide a community hub.
