New research has revealed the UK’s most scenic navigable canals with the Caledonian Canal coming out top.
When it comes to man-made waterways the UK packs a hefty punch. Originally built as an efficient way to transport goods and raw materials, today the canals offer vital access to green and blue spaces and some of the most scenic and impressive sights in the country.
The research from Roam and Roost has revealed the UK’s most scenic canals, and with so many canals spread over the UK, from the Highlands of Scotland to the South of England, there are plenty of picturesque canals to visit for walkers, cyclists, and boaters alike.
The most northerly and perhaps most remote canal, the Caledonian connects the Scottish east coast at Inverness with the west coast at Corpach, Fort William and tops the list taking the coveted number one spot, beating all other navigable UK canals.
The Caledonian Canal passes through some of the most iconic scenery of the United Kingdom.
Originally built to provide ships with safe and reliable passage between the east and west coasts of Scotland, the Caledonian Canal connects multiple lochs along the Great Glen Fault, an efficient route that benefits from their remarkably straight alignment and outstanding natural beauty.
One third of the Length of the Caledonian Canal is man-made for the remainder of its course it takes advantage of Loch Dochfour, Loch Ness, Loch Oich, and Loch Lochy.
Built by Thomas Telford between 1803 and 1822 Neptune’s Staircase at Banavie boasts eight locks on the Caledonian Canal and is the longest staircase lock in Britain, lifting boats 64 feet.
There are a range of ways for all the family to enjoy the scenery of the Caledonian canal including cycling, walking, canoeing and on a canal boat holiday.
The second Scottish canal featured, and final entry from Scotland to make the top 10 is the Crinan Canal coming in at position four.
