On Sunday February 4 primary school teams battled it out in the National Shinty Qualifier in Atlantis Leisure, Oban, for a place in the National finals in Fort William on Friday February 23.
There were teams from across the area, with two teams traveling from Mull – Bunessan and Tobermory – one from the Kilmartin area, one from Taynuilt and six teams from Oban, with Park, Rockfield and St Columba’s schools each playing two teams in the P4/5 section. The P6/7 section saw St Columba’s and Rockfield compete for the winning position.
It was great to see so many children playing shinty and so many schools having resurrected their shinty teams post Covid.
The P4/5 section played in two leagues, with the winners of each league – Rockfield Blues and St Columba’s
– battling for the top spot in a play-off.
Rockfield were the overall winners having had a convincing win over a very well disciplined St Columba’s, who had only returned to shinty shortly before the end of the summer term last year.
The P6/7 was a round-robin format with the three teams playing each other twice for the winning position. Rockfield Blues in this section came out on top.
A big thanks to all the teams for traveling and competing, to the coaches and parents for taking the time to support these kids in their shinty journey.
Also a big thank you to the referees from both Oban Camanachd and Oban Celtic for giving up their time to support the local children, and also thanks to the MacAulay Association for covering the cost of the hall hire for all the indoor tournaments this season.
Good luck to both Rockfield teams representing the area in the national finals next week.
