National press coverage of the anger felt by the families of the Chinook crash victims about the failure of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to hold a remembrance service may have made some in Kintyre feel that our efforts are not appreciated.
But the families, while understandably disappointed by the lack of military-led service, are very thankful to the people of Kintyre for their efforts not only in remembering the tragedy but for their help at the time and in the weeks and months afterwards.
While the grief of losing a loved one can only be understood by the families themselves, the incident had a catastrophic impact on Kintyre, with lasting effects for many of the first-responders at the scene.
It is therefore as important to us here in Kintyre that the incident is remembered with honour and dignity.
The families believe the MoD’s lack of desire to commemorate the tragedy points to a cover-up. With it being the RAF’s worst peacetime loss of life, could there be truth to that allegation?
Regardless of the cause of the crash, the 29 souls who perished that fateful day deserve to be remembered and honoured and Kintyre will do so.
