Car enthusiasts were in for a treat when Clachan Village Hall hosted its third classic motor show on Saturday August 31 on the old hall grounds.
“After a rather dismal summer, we were so lucky to have blue sky and sunshine throughout, which certainly helped to make the event such a resounding success,” said village hall trustee and event co-ordinator Malcolm Ward.
“More than 80 vehicles exhibited, all glistening in the late summer sun, providing a great spectacle for the attending public, with the splendid Loch Fyne Pipe Band performing twice during the afternoon and helping to make it such a memorable occasion.”
Among the vehicles on display were about 18 representing Oban and District Classic Vehicle Club, 12 classic Saabs, all belonging to members of the Scottish Saab Enthusiasts group, eight vintage and classic tractors including a 1947 Fergusson, and 12 classic, vintage and special interest motorcycles including a 1936 Velocette.
There were 12 individual classic car exhibitors whose vehicles included a 1973 MGB Roadster and 1976 MG Midget and two 1972/3 TriumphTR6 Roadsters, as well as numerous special interest vehicles including a pristine Morgan 2 litre plus 4 and a 2004 MG 260 with a large Ford Mustang engine.
One of the best exhibits in the minds of many was a magnificent 1959 Foden commercial lorry, fully refurbished with its aluminium clad ash wood cab, and carrying a bright blue 1961 Ford Dexter tractor sitting on its back, all care of George McNaughton.
More than 250 members of the public attended and seemed to really enjoy the event, aided by the fantastic weather.
There were numerous stalls including bric-a-brac, a cakes and bake stall, craft stall, tombola, raffle and face painting for the children.
Refreshments and barbecue food was much enjoyed by many and available most of the time until all sold out.
The trustees of the village hall charity wish to thank everyone who took part in the event for their generous support and in particular all those who donated prizes and made donations to support the event.
“Just over £2,400 was raised, net of expenses, which is much appreciated,” said Dr Ward. “Proceeds will go toward the Clachan Village Hall development fund, the priority being to renovate the B-listed 19th century iconic old Free Church which was bought with the aid of a grant from the Scottish Land Fund to serve as a replacement village hall/community hub for the Clachan community.
“This is an expensive project, and we need extensive grant funding to achieve our goal.
“The continued success of the Clachan classic motor event has demonstrated the great potential of the old ground site for hosting further revenue-creating events, and we are also seeking funding to improve the site facilities. Any future donations for the hall project will be greatly received.”
