The orchard's committee 'took a leap of faith' says treasurer Catherine Evans to sow the seeds for a Christmas event in the middle of this month but they reaped the benefits.
'Some folk might think it crazy to organise an outdoor event for the middle of December but the committee of Dervaig Community Orchard took a leap of faith and went ahead with planning Christmas at the Orchard for Sunday December 12.

'Lots of people of all ages came along and enjoyed socialising in the open air. Many tried
their hands at producing a decorated yule log, Christmas wreath or willow star and went home happy with what they had produced.
'There was plenty of sustenance in the form of chestnuts and marshmallows roasted over an open fire, delicious freshly baked pizza provided by the Foodie Shack, mince pies and other seasonal sweetmeats as well as hot fruit punch to wash it all down.
'In addition there was a craft stall selling quality items produced by the Orchard Makers Group.
'There was a lovely atmosphere throughout the event and the organisers hope that a lasting result of the day, following on from the success of the Apple Day in September, will be that people of all ages will think that the Community Orchard is a special and magical place, having many happy memories associated with it.
'This was the main aim of the event but the generosity of those attending cannot go unmentioned as the donations received not only covered costs but also exceeded all expectations,' said Mrs Evans.
Dervaig Community Orchard is an orchard made for and by the local community. It began in 2016 and now has a range of apple and pear trees, a fruitcage for delicious berries, a willow labyrinth, a firepit and an outdoor classroom.
Volunteers are always welcome to help out at work parties when the community comes together to look after the orchard. Whether it is pruning, mowing, strimming or painting - there is a job for everyone!
