For over a decade before her passing in June 2022, Kath Johnston from Upper Achintore, had been recycling old Christmas cards into gift tags to attach to Christmas and other gifts.
She had built up collecting points in Oban, Invergarry, Inverness and even Edinburgh but her main collecting venue was Fort William’s Alexandra Hotel.
Kath reshaped these cards into creative gift tags and distributed them through the British Heart Foundation (BHF) shops in Fort William and the West of Scotland – raising over £1,500 in her final full year – 2021 - for the BHF charity.
A group of Kath’s friends are keeping her “gift tags project” alive and meet every Thursday for as long as the supply of used cards lasts.
This year they produced 8,000 tags – equal to 800 bags with potential earning power of £800.
Kath’s husband Ken is very pleased that the little project lives on and intends to keep it alive for as long as there is an interest.
“I am very grateful to Mo, Karen, Mairi, Wilma and many others for their continuing involvement and support,” he told us.
“Kath would have been very proud.”
Katie Conway, manager of the BHF Fort William shop said: “It’s not Christmas at the British Heart Foundation without Kath’s tags!”
If you have cards to recycle you can hand them in at the Reception Desk at the Alexandra Hotel or contact Ken or any of Kath’s friends directly.
