The Coastguard has issued a warning to walkers about a potentially dangerous unstable cliff edge near Machrihanish.
In a post on Facebook on Monday afternoon, the Campbeltown Coastguard Rescue Team wrote: “Danger! Unstable cliff edge. Walkers be aware the cliff is in danger of collapsing adjacent to the burn located at the southern end of the Gauldrons.”
The Gauldrons, the Gaelic name of which translates as “Bay of Storms”, is a beach close to Machrihanish, popular with walkers and tourists thanks to its rugged landscape.
The Coastguard crew thanked ‘BEACHCOMBERS Kintyre’ – a Facebook group for people who love the beach and wildlife, from walkers and swimmers to artists, photographers and archaeologists, to share their passions and showcase their work – for bringing the issue to their attention.
Earlier that day, Amanda Chaisson, creator of the beach-lovers’ group, tagged the Coastguard as she posted: “Caution! Just a wee heads up folks – while exploring the Gauldrons on Friday January 10, we came across a dangerous looking landslip about to happen in the not-too-distant future, by the looks of it.
“We were taking advantage of the freezing weather conditions, hoping to find the waterfall at the end of the Gauldrons beach frozen with icicles. Sadly that wasn’t the case. I had started walking up the burn ‘Bun an Uisge’ when I noticed this potential landslip; lots of rock in it too, just ready to fall.”
Amanda, who also contacted the Coastguard directly, said she “retreated quickly” but climbed up a steep bank on the opposite side to get some photographs and videos to share with the group alongside her warning.
She added: “This is just to warn you all not to walk up the burn to the waterfall or cross the opposite side to walk up the edge as the grassy bank and rock may just be ready to slip into the gully below.
“Stay on the nearside of the burn if exploring the waterfall.
“Keep safe out there beachcombers, wherever you are.”
