A productive month for Kintyre and the Islands
As we approach the end of the year, I’m pleased to provide an update on the work I’ve been undertaking across the Kintyre and the Islands ward. From infrastructure improvements to community initiatives, I remain dedicated to delivering practical solutions for the challenges we face.
Welcoming the Tarbert play park investment
One of the highlights of this month is the long awaited completion of the upgraded play park in Tarbert.
This new facility provides children in the area with a safe, engaging, and imaginative space to enjoy outdoor activities.
The investment in this project reflects our commitment to enhancing amenities for families and young people, ensuring the next generation has access to high-quality recreational opportunities.
The new design includes accessible equipment, making the park inclusive for children of all abilities, which is a vital step forward for our community.
Fighting to improve infrastructure across the ward
Roads, street lighting, and drainage systems remain critical priorities across Kintyre and the Islands.
I’ve raised pressing concerns about the need for road repairs, better maintenance of streetlights, and addressing blocked drains that lead to localised flooding.
These issues affect communities throughout the ward, and I will continue to push for resources to be allocated effectively to ensure our essential infrastructure is properly maintained and improved.
Supporting Farmers and Rural Communities
I strongly support the recent protest by farmers against proposed changes to inheritance tax. These changes could make it even more difficult for farming families to pass on their land to the next generation, jeopardising the future of family farming and our rural economy.
Farmers play a crucial role in sustaining our communities, and I will continue to advocate for policies that protect their livelihoods and ensure a fair future for agriculture in Kintyre and the Islands.
Defending tourism and local businesses
I’m deeply concerned about the proposed visitor levy, which risks deterring tourists from visiting our islands.
Tourism is a cornerstone of our economy, and while I support sustainable practices, it’s essential that any new measures do not harm local businesses or discourage visitors.
Councillor Redman laid wreaths at the war memorials in Portnahaven and Port Wemyss on Remembrance Day.
Commemorating Remembrance Day
This month, I was privileged to honour the sacrifices of those who served our country.
On Sunday November 10, I attended the Remembrance service at St Kiaran’s Church on Islay, followed by laying wreaths at the war memorials in Portnahaven and Port Wemyss.
It is always deeply moving to reflect on the courage and commitment of those who gave so much for our freedoms.
Engaging with the community
I was delighted to donate computer games, a sewing machine, and jigsaws to the Tarbert Youth Group this month.
Supporting creative, educational, and social opportunities for young people is something I feel strongly about, and I hope these contributions will bring enjoyment and inspiration to the group.
Looking ahead
As we enter 2025, I’m determined to continue advocating for the issues that matter most to our communities.
From infrastructure and transport to housing and agriculture, I will keep pushing for practical solutions that deliver real results for the people of Kintyre and the Islands.
