The 130-year anniversary of the Cowal Gathering has been marked by a congratulatory motion submitted to the Scottish Parliament.
Highlands and Islands MSP Tim Eagle, who submitted the motion, said: “It’s amazing to think that the first gathering took place as long ago as 1894. I wonder what the organiser of that first event, Robert Cameron, would have thought if he had known how successful and enduring it would become?
“Traditional events like the Cowal Gathering are incredibly important as they help to define our sense of history, culture and community, which are such distinctive assets to the Highlands. Accordingly, our thanks should go to the generations of people who have organised, funded and competed in the games and kept it in such thriving good health.”
The Motion Text reads: That the Parliament marks the 130th year of the Cowal Highland Gathering; acknowledges that the event is one of Scotland’s most renowned Highland Games and that it boasts a rich history; understands that the first Cowal Gathering was held in 1894 and was attended by around 2,000 people, and that it now attracts around 23,000 spectators and includes competitions in piping, highland dancing and heavy athletics, along with musical entertainment; recognises the hard work that goes into making the event a success each year, and the number of dedicated people involved who ensure that the event runs smoothly, and wishes all those involved with the gathering the best in putting on another fantastic event this year, and in all future years.
The motion was lodged on Tuesday August 6.
