Crime prevention crusaders' productive year

Posters produced by primary pupils were published in internet safety brochures distributed throughout Kintyre.

 

Kintyre Crime Prevention Panel (KCPP), in conjunction with Police Scotland, launched a poster competition, open to all south Kintyre primary schools, after a three-month internet safety campaign led by youth engagement officer PC Karen Cairns.

 

The information brochures, produced and printed by KCPP and featuring winning entries from Dalintober pupils Dion Maguire and Craig Bell, and Jenna Robertson, from Castlehill, were dispersed throughout Kintyre by members of Campbeltown's Police Scotland Youth Volunteers (PSYV).

 

That was just one of the KCPP's activities in the last year, according to its annual report.

 

In a further collaboration with police, the panel funded a KCPP and Police Scotland Young Community Volunteer of the Year Shield which will be presented on an annual basis.

 

Funding was also allocated to lights and cycle repair kits for two bicycles which KCPP presented to police after a previous fundraising campaign.

 

Due to graffiti at Campbeltown's skate park the panel has purchased graffiti remover at the request of the PSYV.

 

After a suggestion from Police Scotland's local traffic representative, KCPP hopes to develop a campaign to educate drivers on eyesight and health requirements when behind the wheel.

 

KCPP has continued communications about crossing points in Campbeltown with Transport Scotland, resulting in the national transport agency agreeing to undertake a public consultation on the matter. The issue of potholes was also raised.

 

Guest speakers at meetings included the Royal Bank of Scotland's personal and community banker from Islay, who spoke about internet safety, as well as a representative from Trading Standards, who provided an update on the company's work and helped the panel with advice.

 

Members of KCPP distributed 100 promotional pens, at a cheap cost as they were 'do it yourself' rather than commercially produced.

 

As reported in the Courier recently, the panel has had diminished membership throughout the year, as a key member died in June and others have left due to ill health and other commitments.

 

The chair, Andrew Hemmings, and vice-chair, Eva MacDonald MBE, met with Police Scotland area commander, Chief Inspector Marlene Baillie, in October to discuss this issue.

 

It was agreed to promote young peoples' attendance at meetings and consequently, in January, meeting times were changed from 7.30pm to 4.15pm. This has facilitated the attendance of some PSYVs. The KCPP devised a safe-guarding policy in light of this development.

 

Due to an unsuccessful funding bid, the panel's annual festive beer mat campaign was cancelled in December.

 

It is hoped that there may be an increase in membership in 2019.
