A new tenant plans to reopen the doors of The Steamer Terminal café, by the Crinan Canal, after a five-year closure.
The Ardrishaig café shut in March 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the lease of the Scottish Canals-owned premises has recently been taken over by newly established business Spectrum Spirits.
The new company is a joint venture between Stirling Whisky Company and The Scottish Gantry, which has specialist spirit shops in Edinburgh, Milngavie and Stirling.
Spectrum Spirits aims to transform the waterfront space into a bistro and bar, with hopes of opening during May this year.
The project is still in planning stages and decisions are currently being made on the layout of the interior and ways to make the space energy efficient.
Director of Spectrum Spirits John Moore said the company wanted to employ locally where possible and fill the menu with ingredients sourced from the area.
He added: “We’ve got some of the finest seafood on our doorstep so we want to take advantage of that, which it looks as if previous occupiers did.
“We want to make the most of local produce, because we’ve got some of the finest larders of anywhere.”
The company is not planning to make structural changes to the building and wants to make full use of the scenic outdoor seating area.
John said: “I think [the bistro] will give visitors another reason to stop and stay in the area and we hope it will help all local businesses, because the more footfall, the more other businesses will benefit as well.”
A spokesperson for Scottish Canals said: “We are delighted to have secured a new tenant to take over the Steamer Terminal and look forward to working with them as they develop their plans.”
