More than 50 cyclists from across the country headed to Tarbert last Saturday (10 August) to take part in the 2024 Kilberry Loop Sportive.
This 40-mile ride, organised by the Mid Argyll Triathlon and Cycle Club and registered with British Cycling has been a fixture on Tarbert’s events calendar since it was first staged in 2018.
Starting and ending at The Gather, Tarbert, the Kilberry Loop Sportive prides itself on being an inclusive event, open to cyclists of all abilities – including an e-bike section - and the perfect first step on the road to competitive cycling.
The route itself is challenging but the rewards are huge, with breath-taking scenery from every angle. For those riders cycling in company and making the most of the opportunity to enjoy the day, the photo opportunities are endless.
And for those cyclists who want to push themselves, the route is exciting enough to ensure they come back year after year in the search of a personal best.
Starting at The Gather, Tarbert, the sportive first takes cyclists north, out of the village on the A83 before heading onto the B8024 single track road.
Cyclists then head south west over Loch Caolisport and travel down its shore line before reaching Kilberry Head, bearing due east and then up through Torinturk, before passing Tarbert Golf Club and then turning back onto the A83 to return to The Gather.
Among the cyclists was Tracy Robertson, originally from Tarbert, who travelled from her home in Glasgow to take part in the event.
She was carrying a sprig of lucky white heather on her bike, which had been given to her by her dad to keep her safe on the route.
Also, taking on the challenge were Rosie and Donald Milne from Edinburgh, who were once again taking on the sportive before heading to Carradale to visit friends for the weekend.
Event organiser John Hardie was delighted to welcome cyclists back to what has become a firm favourite on the Tarbert events calendar, saying: "I’m absolutely delighted to welcome cyclists back to take on the Kilberry Loop Sportive.
"Over the years we’ve built up a core of cyclists who return year after year to take on the KLS. This year’s poor summer had us expecting a low turn-out of competitors so I’m very pleased to see so many on the start line – I also must thank the Scottish weather for being kind to us on the day.
"We start planning the Kilberry Loop Sportive in January, and we rely on a host of people to make it go smoothly.
"First of all, thank you to our sponsors, William Duncan & Co Tarbert, Tarbert Harbour Authority, Tarbert Enterprise Company and Kilchoman Whisky who put a nip of something ‘good’ into our goody bags.
"I’d also like to thank Phil and Corrin at The Gather for their hospitality.
"Thanks to our marshals who covered the 40-mile route, who supported and cheered on our cyclists, and whose encouragement helped tired legs to pedal a bit harder – even up the hills which go on for what seems forever.
"To our registration team, first aiders and of course our cyclists, we couldn’t do this without any of you. Look out for details of next year’s event dropping into your inboxes soon, and don’t forget to forward it onto your friends.’
