The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning across the entire West Coast.
Storm Éowyn, officially named today, is coming courtesy of the Atlantic Jet Stream, which has steered the weather-front straight towards our doorsteps.
Everywhere in western Scotland, including all of the Inner and Outer Hebrides, Orkney, Shetland and Arran, lies within the yellow warning zone.
The Met Office has predicted 80mph winds in coastal areas, which they have labelled a "threat to life", as well as 50-60mph winds further inland.
These threats come from falling debris and large waves whipped up by the winds. Travel disruption on railways and ferry services is likely and should be expected.
Heavy rain is also expected throughout the storm’s duration.
The storm is expected to make landfall in the early hours of Friday morning, and by Friday night a band of low pressure is expected to blanket the area in a layer of snow.
The warning is in place until midday on Saturday, when the wind speeds are expected to die down.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mike Silverstone said: “Storm Éowyn will bring a period of very unsettled, potentially disruptive, weather to the UK through Friday and into Saturday.
“The strongest gusts are likely to be felt across parts of Northern Ireland, northern England, north west Wales and western Scotland, where exposed sites could get gusts in excess of 80mph, which has the potential to cause impacts for those in these areas. There will also be some heavy rain, bringing some unpleasant conditions to end the week.
“The initial warning for Storm Éowyn has been issued several days in advance, so it’s important to stay up to date with the forecast as further details emerge in the coming days.”
