The drummer with Arran cover band Dark White has enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity by performing with The Killers during a sell-out performance at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow.
Twenty-three-year old Sam Hirschfield of Brodick previously attended The Killers concerts in 2022 and 2023 in Falkirk and Edinburgh, with a sign asking to drum on the song For Reasons Unknown.
This year, at their performance in Glasgow, The Killers lead singer Brandon Flowers noticed his sign and invited him on stage to perform with the band.
Before usual drummer Ronnie Vannucci Junior vacated his seat, Brandon asked Sam if he was at the concert the night before and if he was ready.
Sam nodded confidently, picked up the drum sticks and performed a flawless rendition of the song. He pushed any nerves to the back of his mind and concentrated on his performance.
The true extent of what he was doing only struck Sam during an interval in the song. Undaunted, he completed his performance and enjoyed every second of having 14,000 people cheering him on.
Following the performance, Sam said the band was very complimentary about his performance and seemed genuinely pleased for him.
Sam’s younger brother Jack was also at the event and filmed the entire encounter which can be found on YouTube. The video has since garnered comments describing Sam’s performance as “knocking it out of the park”, “perfect” and “nailed it”.
Sam told the Banner: “It was so surreal walking up, especially in the Hydro, which is my local, where I go to watch a lot of gigs. So looking out and seeing it from that perspective and thinking about how many other bands have stood there was amazing.
“The Killers are my favourite and shaking Brandon’s hand was equally surreal and such an achievement. They were so nice and welcoming as well, which was great.
“I have to say a huge thank you to everyone in the Arran High School music department for getting me into drumming and for their endless encouragement.
“Without them, and Arran Youth Foundations where I was allowed to practice at the youth cabin, I would never have been able to enjoy this dream come true.”
Sam says he has no idea where this surge of international attention will end but told the Banner it would be a lifelong dream to be able to play the drums for a living.
The Killers - Brandon Flowers, Dave Keuning, Ronnie Vannucci Junior and Mark Stoermer - are continuing with their Rebel Diamonds tour and are currently playing at the O2 in London.
The band shot to international stardom after their 2003 hit Mr Brightside and have since released seven studio albums. The latest album, Pressure Machine, was released in August 2021.
Following their UK tour, the Killers will host their 2024 residency performances at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, starting next month.
