Hyndland RFC 0 – Mid Argyll RFC 74
Mid Argyll men’s 1st XV travelled to Glasgow last Saturday, September 28, to take on Hyndland RFC in an Arnold Clark West Region League Division 3 game at Scotstoun Stadium.
A full squad made the journey and the team were keen to put the opening two league loses behind them and kick start their season. It was important to try to change the early potential into a win.
Mid Argyll kicked off and put the home team under immediate pressure winning a lineout on the far side.
When the lineout was won the ball was moved through the backs with speed and had the home team scrambling to keep the attack out.
As the pressure built and Mid Argyll advanced up the pitch the Glasgow side looked vulnerable and when debutant Callum Murray got the ball 10m out there was no stopping him as he exploded across the line for the Boars opening try of the day. The conversion was missed but on three minutes the Boars were in the lead.
In the next 20 minutes the Mid Argyll men showed what they are capable of when they get into their stride. First Daniel Broderick opened his account for the day and this time Murray MacDonald slotted over the extras. Then Dougie Ritchie got his first of the day and again MacDonald added the conversion.
Then MacDonald got a try, quickly followed by Archie Spenser and then Liam Long with Long’s try converted.
Hyndland rallied then and put on a determined defensive show until just before half time when Broderick crossed for his second of the match and again MacDonald converted.
When the halftime whistle came the Argyll men were leading 0-43.
The coaches made a few changes at half time and despite fresh legs going on, the momentum was temporarily lost.
Hyndland fought bravely and started to take the game to Mid Argyll with some great attacking play making use of the fast centres. To their credit the Boars rallied and held out the attacks despite being camped on their own 5m line.
Injuries were now beginning to affect the home team and although a couple of late arrivals bolstered them, It wasn’t long until the visitors found that scoring touch again with Ali Peterson breaking a tiring defensive line. Minutes later MacDonald went over for his second and scored the conversion as well.
Hyndland now threw everything at Mid Argyll to get on the score sheet as the visitors conceded penalty after penalty on their own try line.
This culminated in the very unfortunate Ruaridh Condie being yellow carded just 30 seconds after entering the field, in what was very much a team yellow with only 20 minutes left on the clock.
Despite this, the Boars’ defence again held out before replying with a second try from Spenser then Alex Smith got on the score sheet, which MacDonald converted before Ritchie rounded off the day with his second and then converted his own try.
Lots of players had a great game this weekend but Callum Murray was the Fyne Ales Man of the Match for an outstanding debut in the from row and contributing his opening try of the season.
This Saturday, October 5, the Boars welcome Isle of Mull RFC to the ropework. KO 3pm.
