Tarbert AFC 3
Strathlcyde University 1
Greater Glasgow Premier Amateur Football League
A large crowd gathered at Cil Andreis last Saturday in sweltering conditions to see Tarbert Amateur Football Club take on Strathclyde University in the Greater Glasgow Premier Amateur Football League.
They were treated to an entertaining match with both teams intent on playing a passing game.
The match was well handled by referee Jimmy Litster.
Long grass on the pitch did not help either team with passes having to be hit extra hard to get to their intended target.
Strathclyde had a couple of long range efforts tipped round the post by Tarbert goalie Finn Scott while, at the other end of the pitch, a Caskie effort bound for the top corner was equally well dealt with by the opposition keeper.
Tarbert were persevering in playing out from the back, which largely worked, but the final ball was letting them down, not giving the forward players much to work on.
Half-time 0-0.
Coach Scott asked for more of the same in the second half, convinced goals would come.
However it was the opposition that scored first with a terrific shot into the top corner.
Tarbert kept probing with Prentice and MacIver coming close, but stout defending prevented a goal.
Undeterred they kept pushing for the equaliser and it finally came from Ryan Caskie with a fine right foot effort.
He got his second soon after when referee Litster applied the advantage rule following a crude tackle on youngster MacNab.
A swift counter followed, with Ryan firing a cracker into the net from 18 yards low to the keeper’s right.
A third followed when a measured lob forward by Selfridge saw the keeper and central defender get in a mix up with the defender heading the ball over the advancing keeper into the empty net.
Full time 3-1.
This was a deserved victory for the home side with the youngsters in the team doing brilliantly well since the turn off the year.
Tarbert are due to play their final game of the season at home this Saturday against Craignuek AFC, however, they have intimated they are not willing to travel.
