Below average rainfall in July has forced the Crinan Canal to restrict entry to larger boats.
And, despite heavy rain over recent days, the authorities responsible for canal operations are, for the time being, maintaining the limits on vessel size.
A spokesperson for Scottish Canals told the Advertiser: “We will continue to monitor the water levels and lift restrictions when it is safe to do so."
The temporary measures came into force on Saturday August 3, impacting boats with drafts measuring 2.2 metres or more.
The spokesperson added: “A very small percentage of our vessels are over 2.2m. The average leisure yacht that transits the Crinan Canal is 2.0m and the average cruiser is 1.5m.”
However, for boats with a draft of 2.2 metres or more, entry to the canal can only be made after giving 48-hours’ notice, and vessels with a draft of more than 2.4 metres can only be admitted on Fridays or Saturdays and after giving prior notification to the local operations team.
A statement from Scottish Canals said: “Due to ongoing dry weather Scottish Canals advise customers on the Crinan Canal of some alterations to normal service to be implemented from Saturday August 3.
“Please note that we will hold single vessels to make effective use of the lock. Where a single craft “splits” from a group that vessel may also be held for a period to join another locking.
“We will endeavour not to cause undue delay and hope that your co-operation will help us maintain levels of service throughout the summer period.”
