Benderloch and North Connel Drama Club have set the stage for this year’s festive pantomime.
Once again penned by playwright Alan McHugh, next month will see a work of geni-us come alive as the talented cast brings you Aladdin.
Always a favourite with audiences, Alan’s humour is typically “central belt” in nature, but with his kind permission, the cast have transferred the action to more familiar surroundings with the script now including current news topics and local targets for irreverent comment.
A spokesperson for Benderloch and North Connel Drama Club said: “We hope the local place names and characters will amuse our audiences!”
Club stalwart, George Hamilton, has hung up his “Dame” gowns and takes on the role of director, bringing into play many years of stage experience. The cast involves all ages, from lively Generation Z to experienced Baby Boomers. Technical and creative assistance is provided by a strong backstage team, and this year we welcome Isabel Hopley’s dance troupe to our show.
The well-known story of Aladdin takes the audience on a journey from a wee coastal town that you may be familiar with, to more exotic locations by some unusual modes of transport.
Some of the cast are equally exotic; lovelorn Widow Twankey and son Wishee Washee accompany us on exciting adventures assisted by the more glamorous Scherezade and Genie, who use their magical powers with abandon.
There is love interest for Princess Jasmine and SoShy, her maid, and everyone will all be able to sympathise with the Emperor and Empress, who are “at their wits end and need to find someone to save the country from ruin”.
Naturally there are conflicts between goodies and baddies, with the audience encouraged to cheer on their heroes or boo the villains.
The unscrupulous baddie, Abanazar, will stop at nothing to rule the world (does that remind you of anyone?). But can his plans be foiled by our cool, clever hero, Aladdin?
Come along to the Corran Halls and find out!
