Lochgilphead Red Star 1 Baljaffray AFC 2
Great Glasgow Premier AFL - Division 3
Lochgilphead Red Star welcomed Baljaffray AFC to the joint campus with the away side heading back up the road with all three points after an entertaining game finished 2-1 to the visitors.
After last week’s excellent home performance Red Star were confident in getting a positive result, but Baljaffary had other ideas and were also in a confident mood after some excellent results helped them towards the top of the league.
The game kicked off and from the offset both teams were evenly matched with few clear cut chances for both teams.
Red Star were to create the first few chances with Rhys Casci coming close but twice shooting wide. Next up to have an effort on goal was young Ruaridhi Green whose net-bound shot was deflected for a corner.
The visitors took the lead when their first attack of the game resulted in a corner and the unmarked number six ghosted in at the back post to head past Star’s keeper, Struan Urquhart.
Manager Iany Philips was forced into an early substitution after Craig Aitken was caught with a late challenge which resulted in him leaving the pitch with visible stud marks and bruising just below the knee.
The game was getting a little bit fiery and referee Jimmy lister, who had another good game, had to have a quiet word with the visitors number three, who caught young Cammy Lewis twice with late challenges.
As the half wore on both teams struggled to create anything else in front of goal and the half finished 1-0 to the visitors.
The second half started exactly how it finished with both teams struggling to create anything in front of goal.
And with 50 mins on the clock Red Star were having a bit more possession and looked the team more likely to score but sadly it was the visitors who were to score, against the run of play.
Red Star could have folded but they showed great fighting spirit and it wasn’t long before they pulled a goal back.
Cammy Lewis delivered an inch perfect cross for the incoming Fraser Talbot, who finished into the top corner from just inside the box.
Red Star were now pushing and creating a number of chances but just couldn’t break the back line of the visitors.
The best and final chance fell to Rhys Casci, who picked up the ball in the middle of the park and went passed five Baljaffray players only to be brought down inside the box, penalty was the shout, free kick was the outcome.
While Rhys was brought down in the box he was firstly fouled just outside the box.
Nothing came from the free kick and the game ended 2-1 to the visitors.
Manager Iany Philips said: “I was pleased with how we played; we fought hard and played some good football at times, we just need to take these chances that we create.
“That’s the difference today. We also have to remember that more than half the team are playing in their first year in amateur football. We are being bullied at times but that’s part of the learning curve. The youngsters are gaining great experience this season which they will benefit from and kick on the next year.
