From Nationals to Highers, Advanced Higher qualifications to college courses, national progression awards, Baccalaureate and Foundation Apprenticeships - pupils have been making the grades.
Head teacher Peter Bain said: “All our staff are very proud of our youngsters who have done exceptionally well. Many of their career aspirations are wonderfully diverse and I’m sure they all have great futures ahead of them.”
Here are just some of the school's success stories:
Luke Mulligan completed a range of National Qualification courses in S4 and also took a Level 4 Hairdressing Course delivered in the Oban High School salon by UHI Argyll. In S5, he progressed to Level 5 Hairdressing and also Higher Beauty. He performed so well that he has been named the UHI Argyll School Link Pupil of the Year. During S5, he also completed a Customer Service Award, Mental Health and Wellbeing award and took part in Scottish Mental Health Week by giving junior pupils some beauty treatments. This year Luke is combining school-based studies in Higher Business and Fashion and Textiles with a Hairdressing apprenticeship with a local salon and UHI Argyll.
Ewan Dowd achieved seven excellent National 5 awards in S4 and achieved five As in his recent Highers in Maths, English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. This year he is studying Advanced Highers in Maths and Physics, Higher Geography and a Level 6 Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering. Ewan plans to study Geophysics at the
University of Edinburgh and hopes his studies will help him find a career that will help protect the planet.
Calan McGuigan gained seven National 5 awards in S4 and excelled in S5, achieving five As in his Highers in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Graphic Communication and English. This year Calan is studying three Advanced Highers in Maths, Physics and Chemistry as well as the Level 6 Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering and has already been accepted to study Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Glasgow in 2024. Calan is also a Stem Club leader and ambassador - he was one of the leaders for a challenge which gained third place recognition in a recent European Competition. In addition, he is a member of the school's Pipe Band and Traditional School of Music.
In S4, Ellie McTaggart completed a range of National Qualification courses, and a Level 4 Automotive course with UHI Argyll. In S5 she progressed to a mixture of Highers, a Level 5 College course in Engineering and a Level 5 Foundation Apprenticeship in Construction. This session Ellie is completing an NPA in Creative Industries, Higher Photography, Advanced Higher Art and a number of SQA awards such as Leadership and Customer Service. Ellie has also signed up to be a Construction Ambassador to show that this is an area for all pupils and encourage more girls to choose these subjects. In the future, Ellie has plans to apply for an apprenticeship in either the Airport and Fire and Rescue Service or a Health and Social Paramedic
course.
Kay Logan achieved seven excellent National 5 awards in S4 and then gained five As in her recent exams in History, Modern Studies, English, Music and Business Management. This session Kay is studying Advanced Higher Modern Studies, Higher Spanish and Religious and Moral Education, and a Level 6 Foundation Apprenticeship in Business and IT. Kay’s career plan is to study International Relations and Politics at Glasgow or St Andrew’s University and she hopes to eventually work in a government post or perhaps the United Nations. As well as being a Clan Leader, Kay has gained
many other achievements and experiences at Oban High School. She has completed a Mental Health and Wellbeing Award, has just completed a week-long teambuilding and leadership outward bound course and she is also a Scottish Swimming Young Leader.
Victoria Sassano De Lima has just gained eight National 5 awards and has now moved on to study Highers in Business, Spanish, History, English and Maths, as well as a GCSE in Portugese. Her goal is to excel in her subjects and eventually study law at an English University. Victoria's dream is to become a corporate lawyer in London. During the summer, she completed an online internship in Business and Human Rights at one of London’s top law firms and she has been asked to attend a follow-up event in September.
Sophia Lambson achieved eight As in her recent National 5 exams and has now moved on to S5 where she is taking Highers in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, English and French. Sophia hopes to study medicine at university and would like to become a surgeon in either paediatric or maternal medicine. Sophia recently attended a medical insight day where she was able to speak with doctors and medical students to get a feel for life as a doctor and was also able to gather information on different specialities in the medical field.
