The grass at Ormidale Park is looking so good you might think it’s auditioning for a role in a commercial for an 8th island golf course!
The streets of Brodick are decked out with flower displays and bunting that would make even the King’s gardener proud. Excitement is reaching fever pitch as the entire island counts down the days to the Brodick Highland Games on August 10.
The pinnacle of the Arran social calendar, this event attracts folks from near and far – we’re talking national and international audiences here, people! From 11am onwards, the village will be buzzing with Highland fun and frolics.
As always this year’s games promise to be packed with all the usual delights that guarantee a fantastic family day out.
Expect the classic heavy events, athletics, Highland dancing, children’s fancy dress and races, stalls, food outlets, and a variety of other quirky attractions.
The real crowd-puller, though, is the pipe band parade. This year, prepare for the Arran Schools Pipe Band, Arran Pipe Band, and the pipe bands from the Isle of Cumbrae and Maybole. It’s going to be music to your ears – literally.
And let’s not forget the Highland games’ pièce de résistance: the heavy lifting events. Competitors will be hurling hammers, tossing cabers, and showing off their muscle power in contests of weight for distance and height. It’s like a strongman competition but with kilts and more cheering.
Traditionally, the festivities kick off at 11am with all the bands marching from the pier to Ormidale Park. It’s a sight to behold – a parade so grand that even the seals stop and stare. The Highland dancing will get going at 11am, with the heavy events beginning at 11.15am and the children’s fancy dress, races, and pillow fight will commence at 1pm.
The field events will conclude with the ever-popular tug-of-war competition and the special challenge caber toss – an event where “heave-ho” really means business.
Trophies will be presented before the pipe bands make their triumphant return procession to the ferry terminal, where the Arran Pipe Band will give them a rousing send-off worthy of a hero’s departure.
The Brodick Highland Games have been a staple in the village nearly every year since 1886, with breaks only for the World Wars, some early 1900s hiccups, the 1960s, and the infamous 2020 and 2021 Covid interruptions.
Admission is a steal at £5 for adults, and kids under 14 get in for free. Want to compete? Entries can be made on the day, just before the event.
