The guidance was initially introduced to protect staff, patients and visitors against Covid during the pandemic.
The updated guidance, which was released this week, states that face coverings will no longer be required in all hospitals, health centres, community sectors, primary care, social work, and care homes.
Where there are outbreaks, or when masks are still required for infection prevention and control reasons, staff will advise patients and visitors of the requirements.
Jennifer Wilson, NHS Ayrshire and Arran’s executive nurse director, said: “Due to the successful vaccination programme, and the availability of treatments, now is the right time to revise the advice on wearing masks in health and social care settings and return to pre-pandemic guidance.
“We are grateful for the tireless work of all our health and social care staff during these challenging times and to everyone who has helped them by adhering to the guidance.”
