For the first time in Mowi’s history, a father and son duo have taken on the same pivotal role as farm managers. Iain Fraser, the farm manager at Laga Bay, and his son Jack, newly appointed farm manager at Kingairloch, are Lochaber locals who have worked their way up through the company, embodying Mowi’s commitment to nurturing talent from within.
Iain began his journey with Mowi in 1987 at the age of 16, starting out on freshwater sites and steadily building his expertise over the years. Decades later, his son Jack followed in his footsteps, initially helping out with weekend feeding duties in 2010. “I actually planned on going to university,” Jack recalls, “but I enjoyed the job with Mowi so much that I decided to stay on full time after leaving school.”
Jack acknowledges that beginning his career under his father’s mentorship was both challenging and rewarding. “Starting from the bottom and learning the ropes under my dad was a steep learning curve, but that experience has been invaluable in getting me to where I am today. Now, managing the same farm I started on at Kingairloch, I’m excited to help other young people grow their careers here too.”
For Iain, it’s a full-circle moment as well. Reflecting on his own career, he says: “After 20 years working at freshwater sites, my first seawater site was Kingairloch. Back then, we had square steel cages before transitioning to circular ones, and the feed barge we used is the very same one in place today. In fact, it was Jack’s sister who named that feed barge ‘Bradan breagha,’ which means ‘beautiful salmon’ in Gaelic.”
The Fraser family’s connection to Mowi doesn’t stop with Iain and Jack. “We’ve had uncles, cousins, and many other family members work here over the years,” Iain adds. “It really is a family affair, and we’ve always enjoyed being part of this company.”
Sean Anderson, Production Director at Mowi Scotland, adds: “I would like to offer my congratulations to Iain for his exceptional long service. Mowi is extremely proud of the support and guidance he has provided to his team in recent months. I’d also like to congratulate Jack on his new role at Kingairloch and express my gratitude for the local support he has provided to the team at Laga, alongside his father. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed – both have truly gone above and beyond, and I am personally very grateful for all they have done. Here’s to many more years and I wonder what long service records can be made by this father and son duo!”
This landmark moment in Mowi’s history not only highlights the company’s emphasis on career development but also underscores the deep connections forged within its teams. Iain and Jack’s shared journey reflects a family tradition of excellence, and their story is a testament to the opportunities Mowi offers for those eager to grow and make an impact.
The link to Mowi goes further than just work as the company are main sponsors of the Camanachd Association and the world of shinty. Iain played for both Lochaber Camanachd and then Fort William Shinty Club for many years while Jack has been a stalwart of the Fort William Shinty Club since boyhood, playing in many matches which have been supported by Mowi through their sponsorship with the Camanachd Association.
As the new season is about to start, Jack has also been featured as a player in the Camanachd Association’s own ‘National League Team of the Season’ for his exceptional performance on the pitch - almost like Sport reflecting Work!
