Some might say the reunion of iconic rock band Oasis helped make a Campbeltown tribute night a smash hit.
But Cheryl Lang, organiser of last Saturday’s Campbeltown gig, had no secret masterplan to boost sales by holding the event less than two weeks after brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher announced the return of their chart-topping band after a 15-year hiatus.
The Campbeltown Town Hall event, featuring tribute band Stop the Clocks, was actually first supposed to take place in 2019 but it had to be rescheduled after a change in the band’s line-up.
Anyone who failed to secure highly sought-after tickets for the Oasis reunion tour was in for a treat last Saturday night, with Stop the Clocks recreating the sound and energy of the band down to the finest details.
The dance floor was packed all night, with revellers dressed in bucket hats and sunglasses, reminiscent of the 1990s Britpop fashion of the Gallagher brothers’ heyday, dancing the night away.
Campbeltown singer-songwriter Che Martin helped to warm up the audience before the main act, with DJ Alan Glendinning keeping the party going into the small hours afterwards.
Cheryl, who regularly organises events to raise money for local causes and showcase the community’s talents, held the tribute night in aid of the Campbeltown Christmas Lights Group and Campbeltown Pupils Football Club.
The total money raised for the groups has not yet been confirmed, with an additional lucky squares fundraiser, giving participants a chance to win tickets to a Scotland versus Portugal football match, still live.
“Both the Christmas Lights Group and the Pupils were in need of additional funds, which I why I chose them of beneficiaries for this event,” said Cheryl.
“I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who bought tickets and donated to the raffle.
“We couldn’t fundraise without the generosity of the people of Campbeltown. I really do love organising events.”
Cheryl, who is currently trying to source funding to launch her own charity, is already busy planning another tribute night for next year.
