BBC ALBA will close 2024 and mark the start of a New Year with special documentary programmes focused on the lives of two of Scotland’s most accomplished musicians – the late, great Fergie MacDonald MBE and Gaelic singer and actor Kathleen MacInnes.
Staying true to the spirit of Hogmanay, the Gaelic-language channel is screening a special tribute to Fergie on December 31 at 9.30pm, after his sad passing earlier this year.
The hour-long documentary, Fergie MacDonald, The Ceilidh King, tells the story of his life and career, from his childhood days in Moidart, his appearance on STV’s inaugural Gaelic music series ‘Highland Air’ in the 1960s, and the revolutionary introduction of the electric guitar into the cèilidh band line-up.
Featuring a host of heartfelt tributes from many of his friends, family, fellow musicians and sports people, the programme celebrates Fergie’s lifetime of filling dance halls across Scotland with his distinctive brand of dynamic West Coast cèilidh music.
Releasing an estimated 50 records across a prolific 60-year music career, Fergie’s legacy within Scotland’s traditional music scene leaves an enduring influence on his peers.
Among the programme’s special guests are musicians and broadcasters Gary Innes and Phil Cunningham, who share their memories of Fergie alongside special unseen footage from his final TV interview.
Viewers will hear about Fergie the accomplished sportsman. As a clay shooter he earned 14 caps for Scotland and his passion for shinty, including a stint as a trainer for Fort William Shinty Club, led to a chart topping hit single, ‘The Shinty Referee’.
Founding member of Mànran, Gary Innes, said: “Fergie is an integral part of the tapestry that is the Scottish traditional music scene. So many of today’s most successful traditional bands draw inspiration from his achievements and skill. He was a truly authentic character, and his music still plays in our hearts.”
On New Year’s Day (January 1) another unmissable documentary raises the curtain on the life of Gaelic singer Kathleen MacInnes.
Kathleen NicAonghais: Kathleen MacInnes, traces her life and career, from her upbringing in South Uist, to performing in London’s West End alongside David Tennant in Macbeth.
Viewers will see the acclaimed singer balancing the pressures of performing in London with family life in Glasgow, including a highlight visit by her three sons to watch their mum perform at the Harold Pinter Theatre.
Kathleen visits South Uist, where she meets family and friends and explores her musical and performing roots. Family, friends and musical peers share stories about Kathleen’s journey to date.
Packed with a wealth of heart-warming moments and stunning musical performances, the documentary is perfect New Year’s Day viewing for all the family.
