It was 64th on a list of 238 – and it was one of the quickest stops.
Islay’s Port Askaig-based lifeboat is just one of 238 lifeboat stations which are being visited by London couple Belinda and James Richardson in this year’s RNLI 911 challenge.
Their aim is to travel anti-clockwise around the UK and Ireland’s coastline in their Porsche 911, affectionately called ‘Splash’ in 911 hours, visiting every lifeboat station on the way.
By the end of the month the couple hope to have raised enough money via sponsors and donations to fund a D-class inshore lifeboat.
So far more than £83,000 of the total £110,000 has been raised.
The stop-off on Islay lasted barely 15 minutes as the couple and their car drove off the ferry, only to turn right back round and join the queue to get back on the departing ferry.
A spokesperson for RNLI Islay Lifeboat said: “There was about 15 minutes to meet the team, present a couple fo gifts and get back on the ferry to the mainland!”
Belinda, James and ‘Splash’ were met by full time RNLI coxswain David MacLellan; full-time RNLI mechanic Gipper Ainslie; Islay RNLI Fundraising chairperson and sponsor Bruichladdich Distillery representative Joanne Middleton and Islay RNLI press officer and sponsor Bruichladdich Distillery representative Kate Hannett.
They also briefly met crew volunteer Stephen MacNeill who was also in the ferry queue.
Having already visited Tighnabruiach, Arran and Campbeltown, the couple were heading off to Oban, Tobermory, Mallaig, Kyle of Lochalsh and Portree.
The 911 challenge started at RNLI Morecambe lifeboat station. By the time they reach their destination at RNLI Peel on the Isle of Man on September 30 – where the first lifeboat was stationed 200 years ago – they will have travelled more than 8,300 miles in their Porsche 911 and taken 36 ferries.
