Legendary, charismatic and the one and only were just some of the heartfelt tributes paid to Arran shepherd Wullie Stevenson at the weekend.
It was a testament to the man himself, who died in July this year, that so many sheepdog handlers and dogs journeyed from the mainland as well as across the island to take part in a charity event in his memory at Lamlash’s Glenkiln Farm.
Most of those competing in the trials knew Wullie well. Away from the sheepdog course, the day was spent off the field sharing stories and memories in celebration of his life.
Tales were told, smiles and laughs were raised - and of course tears shed too.
By all account Wullie was a cheery man who knew his stuff and only ever showed a short temper if he was moving sheep along the road and a car behind got too pushy. Up on the hills was where he loved to be, he would even turn down the offer of a farmhouse breakfast to get up their early feasting instead on two whole eggs that he would slide down his throat "like two West Coast oysters" remarked GlenKiln’s Kenneth Bone.
Wullie was also "a great poet" shared Kenneth. Wullie would have had "a field day" writing a poem about Sunday. Organisers Dougarie and Kildonan Sheepdog Society, all the competitors, his friends, family and community did him proud.
The ’one and only’s legacy goes on, £523 was raised for ArCaS on the day and there will be more sheepdog trials in his memory to come for nursery dogs.
