Fort William & District Table Tennis League results

The latest round of matches in the Fort William & District Table Tennis League took place recently at Nevis Centre, with the following results.

 

In Division 1, Alin Popu, one of the league's new players this season, recently took on the division's top two players Monte Bleasdale and John Grant. His encounter with Grant illustrated how his form has improved since he joined the club in what was a closely fought match. Popu took the first game 11-8, and then narrowly won the 2nd 12-10 as Grant fought hard to level the match. Taking confidence from going 2-0 up, Popu then took the final game 11-7 for an impressive 3-0 victory.

 

He then faced Bleasdale, who had to rely on his experience as he closely won the first two games 12-10 and 11-9. In the third, however, Popu could not maintain his momentum as Bleasdale recorded a comfortable 11-3 win to take the match 3-0. As a result of these matches, Bleasdale leads the division from Grant, with Popu now moving up into third place.

 

In Division two, Simon Jeffrey still leads the way, although following several recent victories Jim Hinchley remains close behind. John Steele is now third and remains unbeaten although he has yet to face the Division's top two.

 

The Paired Doubles Competition was also played recently, the final being contested by the pairing of John Grant and Neil Cameron who took on Angus MacDonald and Harry Williamson. As expected the match was a close run affair with both sides twice getting the better of the other, and so a fifth game was required to decide the match which was eventually won by Grant and Cameron.

 

The league is always looking for new players of any standard, and coaching is given to those who are new to the game. Practice and league matches are played together on Monday nights at the Nevis Centre from 6.45pm to 9pm.
